July 19, 2024 "The Whenever Report"

The page shall henceforth be known as the “Whenever Report” since there is NO way I’ll ever make a “weekly” report

The beginning of this week had marked the lowest water level of the season so far at roughly 1.75 - 2 feet below normal. The base of the docks were laying on the ground, the stumps were easily impacted, and you could have driven a truck across the Train Trestle. However, over the course of the week, the water level has almost risen back up to its normal state and is roughly 3 inches lower than “normal”.

Fishing has remained good as usual and the fish seem to be scattered and feeding nearly everywhere in all types of water. I have asked 20 different groups what kind of lures/colors they are catching fish with and I have received 20 different answers. The ol’ “just use what you are comfortable using” is holding steady.

The only thing to note that i have heard more than a few times this year is that the fish aren’t directly up against the shore as much as usual so be prepared to back off the shoreline a bit during your stay. Not sure if the water level rising will change that back but that information will be in the next Whenever Report coming to you…. well…. whenever…

June update

The water level on the Grand Falls Flowage has been getting lower throughout the month of June. There has been little rain to replenish the call for power at the hydro dam that powers the local mill and we are about 1.5 feet down from ‘normal’ water level.

The water level has not affected the fishing as far as we can tell and overall the fishing has been great so far this season with the exception of the heat wave that came through here last week where a) the fish were laying low and b) the humans were laying low as well…. it was brutal out there for just about three days.

The spawn this season was early and we saw beds on our shoreline on May 20th for just over a week and the Flowage was in spawn for roughly 2 weeks depending on where you were. The black flies were early and the dragonflies were too. They decimate even the thickest of black fly populations in about 4 days which was late May this year. This is the second year the black flies didn’t survive to see the month of June.

Weather has returned to normal and we are looking at a week of rain and thundershowers (finally). Maybe the rain will raise the water level back up to a more normal level and keep it there for the rest of the season.

Testing the Waters

Welcome to our new page!

This is the first of a weekly report I hope to keep up with this upcoming 2024 season. Here I will be posting brief reports on current water conditions, weather updates, and fishing reports to help new and current customers prepare for their upcoming fishing trip.

Posts will be sporadic until the fishing season has actually arrived in mid-May so stay tuned and check back a week or two before your stay. Hopefully you will all find the information posted here helpful and relevant.

Thanks for visiting and we are looking forward to yet another great bass fishing season here at Down River Camps. Heres to long days, blazing sunsets, bright campfires, and killer bass fishing!

See you soon!
